Technological Edge

Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination technology has slowly evolved since its inception in the 1960s. Despite massive investments in membrane technology, which have greatly improved the robustness of the process and reduced its energy consumption, and the introduction of highly efficient energy recovery devices, no major breakthroughs have been recorded in more than a decade.

As a result, RO vendors such as integrators, operators, engineering companies, etc. are using essentially the same components in the same schematic design, differentiated only by the tradeoffs made between capital and operating costs.

Desalitech is proud to deliver the long-awaited technological breakthrough. Desalitech's patented Closed-Circuit DesalinationTM (CCDTM) technology reduces desalination costs by up to 20%.

With its proprietary hydrostatic process at the core of a water treatment system, Desalitech lowers the average pressure required for RO and provides other advantages, achieving significant operating cost and capital cost savings. Its performance is being proven in a range of currently-operating commercial installations using the same membranes and pumps as in conventional RO, but configured in a new way. The CCD process recycles concentrate until a desired recovery level is achieved, replacing brine with fresh feed without disrupting continuous permeate production and with practically no energy loss.

Readily scalable to micro- and mega-sized systems, CCD technology represents a substantial breakthrough in affordable desalination.
